Vss. 14-19: The Fourth Day of Creation: The Sun, Moon, and Stars.
‘ôr – meaning illumination
mâ’ôr meaning a luminous body or luminary, light-bearers, light-holders
Revelation 22:5; And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.
Reasons for Heavenly Bodies:
(1) To divide between day and night;
(2) To determine periods of time, days, months, years, seasons, festivals,
(3) To give light upon earth, providing by day for the growth, health, and strength of living organisms, and by night for the guidance of the traveler and the mariner.
For signs, and for seasons: Literally means, “for signs and for fixed times.”
Job 38:31: “Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades or loose the cords of Orion? Can you lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season, or can you guide the Bear with its children?
Mazzârâh/Mazzaroth: (maz-zaw-raw’)- noted constellation (only in the plural), perhaps collectively the zodiac:
Luke 1:70: as He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from eternity;
Act 3:21: whom Heaven truly needs to receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of His holy prophets since the world began.
Psalms 19:1-6: To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
Psalm 90:12: So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.
Isaiah 47:13-14: You are exhausted by your many plans; now let the astrologers stand up and save you, the stargazers, making known what is coming on you into the new moons. Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame; there shall not be a coal to warm them; nor fire, to sit before it.
Deuteronomy 4:19: And beware lest you raise your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them, things that the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven.
Ezekiel 8:16-18: And he brought me into the inner court of the house of the LORD. And behold, at the entrance of the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men, with their backs to the temple of the LORD, and their faces toward the east, worshiping the sun toward the east. Then he said to me, “Have you seen this, O son of man? Is it too light a thing for the house of Judah to commit the abominations that they commit here, that they should fill the land with violence and provoke me still further to anger? Behold, they put the branch to their nose. Therefore I will act in wrath. My eye will not spare, nor will I have pity. And though they cry in my ears with a loud voice, I will not hear them.”
Matthew 16:26: For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?
The word for world is “kosmos”
