- In the beginning, God:
God Himself was before the beginning:
Psalm 93:2: Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting.
Psalm 90:1-2: Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
God is the only infinite, eternal, and unchangeable spirit, the perfect being in whom all things begin, and continue, and end.
- In the beginning, God:
God was in three Persons before the beginning, and the Persons shared a relationship of love and fellowship:
John 17:5, 17:24“O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was…for You loved Me before the foundation of the world”
- In the beginning, God:
Before the beginning, there was an eternal purpose in the heart of God.
- In the beginning, God:
Before the beginning, God had a specific plan to fulfill this eternal purpose.
1 Peter 1:20: He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you.
Titus 1:2: in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began.
1 Corinthians 2:7: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory.
2 Timothy 1:9: who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.
Ephesians 1:4: just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love.
- Vs. 2: Initial Conditions of Creation:
In the beginning [time] God created the heaven [space] and the earth [matter]. And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God [force] moved [motion] upon the face of the waters.
Isaiah 45:18: For thus says the Lord, Who created the heavens, Who is God, Who formed the earth and made it, Who has established it, Who did not create it in vain, Who formed it to be inhabited: “I am the Lord, and there is no other.”
John Gill put it this way: He formed it to be inhabited; the earth indeed was “tohu” when it was first created, Gen:1:2, which word is used of the chaos of the earth first made, here rendered “in vain“; but then it was not created to continue so, nor did it continue so; for though it was first without form, it was soon formed in a beautiful manner, and fitted for the habitation of men and beasts.
tôhû– can mean vain, but also means formlessness, emptiness, empty space
Romans 5:12: Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.
James 1:4; But let patience have its perfect work, so that you may be perfect and entire, lacking nothing.
Philippians 1:6, being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.
Charles Spurgeon said; “The first divine act in fitting up this planet for the habitation of man was for the Spirit of God to move upon the face of the waters. Till that time, all was formless, empty, out of order, and in confusion. In a word, it was chaos; and to make it into that thing of beauty which the world is at the present moment, even though it is a fallen world, it was needful that the movement of the Spirit of God should take place upon it.”
John 1:1-3; In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and without Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being. The earth was without form, and void:
- Vss.3-5: Light is Created and divided from the Darkness:
John 1:5 says; The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Psalms 104:2: covering yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out the heavens like a tent.
2 Corinthians 4:3-6; But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
John 8:12: Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Revelation 22:5: And there will be no night there. And they need no lamp, or light of the sun; for the Lord God gives them light. And they will reign forever and ever.
Psalms 119:105; Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Ephesians 6:12: For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
John 3:19-21: And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
The six days of Creation can be grouped into two categories of three days each:
Day 1-light Day 4-sun, moon, & stars
Day 2-waters beneath waters above (sky) Day 5-fish, birds
Day 3-dry land, seas and plants Day 6-animals, people
“yôm”– From an unused root meaning to be hot; a day (as the warm hours), whether literally (from sunrise to sunset, or from one sunset to the next): day (24 hour period)
