Genesis 4:8-15 – Consequences of the Fall

Genesis 4:8-15 – Consequences of the Fall

I. Vs. 8: Cain Murders Abel:

Ephesians 4:31: Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.

Matthew 5:21-22: “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.”

1 John 3:12: We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous.

II. Vs. 9: God Questions Cain.

John 8:44: You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Spurgeon said; “The cool impudence of Cain is an indication of the state of heart which led up to his murdering his brother; and it was also a part of the result of his having committed that terrible crime. He would not have proceeded to the cruel deed of bloodshed if he had not first cast off the fear of God and been ready to defy his Maker.”

Jude 1:11 says; Woe to them! For they walked in the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain to Balaam’s error and perished in Korah’s rebellion.

2 Timothy 3:5 says, Having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

III. Vss. 10-12: God’s curse upon Cain:

Hebrews 12:24: and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

1 John 1:7: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

Romans 16:20: The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Ephesians 2:8-10: For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Warren Wiersbe said: A vagabond has no home; a fugitive is running from home; a stranger is away from home but a pilgrim is heading home. Deuteronomy 30:19 says “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore, choose life.” Cain made the wrong choice, and instead of being a pilgrim in life, he became a stranger and a fugitive, wandering the land.

IV. Vss. 13-15: Cain Complains About God’s Judgment.

Donald Barnhouse said: “One of the consequences of sin is that it makes the sinner pity himself instead of causing him to turn to God. One of the first signs of new life is that the individual takes sides with God against himself.”

Genesis 9:6: “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.”

Hebrews 9:27 tells us; “And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,”
