Genesis 6:14-7:5 – THE ARK

Genesis 6:14-7:5 – THE ARK

Genesis 6:12-13: And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth.”

I. Vss. 14-16: God Tells Noah to Build an Ark:

Exodus 2:3: But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark (têbâh) of papyrus for him, and daubed it with bitumen and with pitch, and put the child in it. And she laid it in the reeds by the river’s edge.

“Pitch” — kopher equivalent to the Hebrew kaphar “to cover” simply means “a covering.” Hebrew word for “atonement.”

The Ark is 450 feet long by 75 feet wide and 45 feet tall.

Inside the Ark

John 10:9 says: I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.

John 14:6 says; Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

II. Vss. 17-21: Purpose of the Ark and Noah’s Responsibility:

Jeremiah 31:31-34: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the LORD. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

III. Vs. 22: Noah’s Obedience:

Example of righteousness:

Ezekiel 14:14: And though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver only their own souls by their righteousness, says the Lord Jehovah.

A preacher of righteousness:

2 Peter 2:5: And He did not spare the old world, but saved Noah the eighth one, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly.

IV. Vss. 7:1-5: God Invites Noah Into the Ark:

Noah’s Ark and the flood serve as a symbolic precursor to the crucifixion and resurrection of our Lord:

Safety from Judgment:

The Single Door:

John 10:9: I am the door. If anyone enters in by Me, he shall be saved and shall go in and out and find pasture.

Baptism and Resurrection:

1 Peter 3:18-22: For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.

2 Corinthians 5:17: So that if anyone is in Christ, that one is a new creature; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
