John 17 – The Real Lord’s Prayer

John 17 – The Real Lord’s Prayer

Breakdown of John 17

This Prayer is really the Lord’s Prayer because He prayed it

It is the longest recorded prayer in Scripture that Jesus Prayed.

The Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6 and Luke 11, were models of How to pray and some of the same elements were in this Prayer.

  1. The Prayer is repeatedly directed to God the Father
  2. There are recognitions and concern for God’s Name
  3. The Work of the Kingdom of God is spoken
  4. He prays concerning the importance of keeping from evil.

“much more space is taken up by our Lord’s intercessions as He nears the end of his labors. After the closing supper, his public preaching work being ended, and nothing remaining to be done but to die, he gave himself wholly unto prayer. He was not again to instruct the multitudes, nor to heal the sick, and in the interval which remained, before he should lay down his life, he girded himself for special intercession. He poured out his soul in life before he poured it out unto death.” Spurgeon

The Pray breaks down into three parts

I. Vss. 1-5: Jesus Prays for Himself:

  1. His Hour had come.. vs 1
  2. The Father will be glorified… Vs 1
  3. Authority had already been given to grant eternal life vs 2
  4. Jesus is the only way to life vs 3
  5. He fulfilled His Mission vs 3-4

II. Vss. 6-19: Jesus Prays for His disciples:

  1. Jesus speaks of His Mission among the disciples vs 6-8
  2. Jesus Fulfills His prayers for them vs 9-10
  3. Jesus asks the Father to keep them vs 11-12

Spurgeon said, “You have been redeemed, but you must be kept, you have been regenerated, but you must be kept. You are pure in heart and hands but you must still be kept.”

Robert Murray said, “If I could hear Christ praying for me, I would not fear a million enemies.”

What do we need keeping from:

    1. division
    2. error
    3. sin
    4. Hypocrisy
  4. Jesus has his Joy Fulfilled Vs 13-16
  5. Jesus prays for the disciples to be sanctified Vs 17-19

III. Vss. 20-26: Jesus Prays for All future Believers:

  1. Jesus left the future believers to the disciples and all those who would follow Him
  2. Jesus Prays for Unity among all believers

Bruce says, “As in the previous prayer for the eleven, Jesus prayed that their unity would follow the pattern of the Godhead, specifically in the relationship between God the Father and God the Son. If the Father is in him and he is in them, then the Father is in them: They are drawn into the very life of God, and the life of God is perfect love.”

Ephesians 4:3 “Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.”

  3. Jesus prays to be with His People so his glory can be fulfilled Vs 24
  4. Powerful conclusion to Jesus’ prayer

“In one sense, the entire work of Jesus could be summed up in saying that He declared to the disciples and to the world the name of God the Father. That is, He revealed and lived out the character and nature of God the Father as the brightness of Hos glory and the express image of His person.”

    Hebrews 1:3

Jesus prayed that His disciples would not only be filled with the love of God the Father, but also they would know the indwelling presence of Jesus Himself.
