Mark 4:21-34 – What is the Kingdom Like?

Mark 4:21-34 – What is the Kingdom Like?

I. Vss. 21-23: Believers Responsibility With the Word of God:

Clement of Alexandria: A well, when pumped regularly, produces purer water. If neglected, and no one uses it, it changes into a source of pollution. Use keeps metal brighter, but disuse produces rust. So “No one lights a candle and puts it under a bowl, but upon a candlestick, that it may give light.” For of what use is wisdom, if it fails to make those who hear it wise?

II. Vss. 24-25; Hearing the Word Makes us Accountable:

Charles Spurgeon:  “The hearer of the gospel will get measure for measure, and the measure shall be his own measure.”

More will be given:

More desire to hear.

More understanding of what you hear.

More personal possession of the blessings you hear about.

Romans 10:17  So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

III. Vss. 26-29; The Parable of the Growing Seed:

Isaiah 55:11; so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

John Gill; At death or at the end of the world, which the harvest represents: when all the elect of God are called by grace, and grace in them is brought to its perfection, and they have brought forth all the fruit they were ordained to bear, they will then be all gathered in.

IV. Vss. 30-34: The mustard Seed:

Warren Wiersbe:  “The growth of the kingdom will not result in the conversion of the world. In fact, some of the growth will give opportunity for Satan to get in and go to work!
