- Vss. 45-46: Jesus Departs for Prayer:
John 6:14-15; Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.” Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.
Only three occasions in this Gospel in which Jesus withdraws to pray, and each time some sort of crisis is involved:
- After a busy Sabbath in Capernaum (Mark 1:35)
- After the multiplication of the loaves (Mark 6:46)
- At Gethsemane after the Lord’s Supper (Mark 14:32–36)
- Vss. 47-52: Jesus Walks on the Water:
Charles Spurgeon said; “The apostolic crew rowed, and rowed, and rowed, and it was no fault of theirs that they made no progress, ‘for the wind was contrary unto them.’ The Christian man may make little or no headway, and yet it may be no fault of his, for the wind is contrary. Our good Lord will take the will for the deed, and reckon our progress, not by our apparent advance, but by the hearty intent with which we tug at the oars.”
There are two good reasons to put away fear:
One reason may be that the problem is not nearly as bad as one had thought;
The other reason is that even though the problem may be real, there is an even greater solution and help at hand;
1 Peter 5:6; “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you.”
The 23rd Psalm says, “The Lord in my Shepherd; I shall not want” (Provision), and that “I will fear no evil” (Protection).
- Vss. 53-56: Jesus Heals Many in Unusual Ways;
Acts 19:11-12: And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them.
Acts 5:15: so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them.
1 John 5:4: “And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.”
