A. Feeding the Four Thousand
I. Vss. 1-4: Another Lesson for the Disciples:
- You have 5,000, you have 4,000.
- You have two different locations. These are months apart
- You have 7 baskets and 12 baskets.
Jesus confirms the 2 different feedings later in this chapter when He is getting on the disciples…..again
Mark 6:52; “for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.”
Matthew 15:30: “And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them.”
Job 23:12: I have not departed from the commandment of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my portion of food.
Hebrews 4:15: For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses.
2 Kings 13:23: And the LORD was gracious unto them, and had compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither cast he them from his presence as yet.
Psalms 78:35-38: They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer. But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues. Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant. Yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them; he restrained his anger often and did not stir up all his wrath.
Psalm 111:4: He has made his wonderful works to be remembered: the LORD is gracious and full of compassion.
Compassion- “To suffer, to feel with”
Lamentations 3:22-23: It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Romans 9:15: For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”
II. Vss. 5-10: Jesus and the Disciples Feed the Multitude.
Henry Ironside said; “Why were these not mentioned before? Could it be that they had been withheld by the doubting disciples until they saw how the bread was multiplied? Apparently, the fishes were blessed separately and then distributed as the bread had been.”
kophinos– “a small basket”
spuris– “(as woven); a hamper”
