Mark 8:22-30 – Opened Eyes

Mark 8:22-30 – Opened Eyes

  1. Vss. 22-26: Blind Eyes Are Opened:

Matthew 11:20-23:  Then he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent. “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.  But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

Albert Barnes and Adam Clarke had an interesting perspective on this: “It is likely that this was done merely to separate the eyelids; as, in certain cases of blindness, they are found always gummed together. It required a miracle to restore the sight, and this was done in consequence of Christ having laid his hands upon the blind man: it required no miracle to separate the eyelids, and, therefore, natural means only were employed – this was done by rubbing them with spittle.”

tēlaugōs (tay-low-goce). It’s a combination of 2 words meaning in a far shining manner, that is, plainly: A far off; radiant.

Spiritual Lesson in 3 stages:

  1. Blindness—We are all first spiritually blind
  2. Partial Sight—Understand partially but more to learn

1Corinthians 13:12 says  “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.”

Socrates:  “Well there are a great many of the Athenians who think they know, and I know I do not know. And since I know that I do not know, I am the wisest of the Athenians.”

  1. Perfect Sight—We come into His presence
  1. Vss. 27-30: Peter Confesses Jesus as the Messiah

Malachi 4:5:  “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes.

Matthew 16:17-18: And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
